First Blog Post

 Hello everyone! My name is Sydney Greene and I am excited to share my first blog post with you. Rob Priewe, my academic advisor and current Journalism/News Reporting teacher, encouraged me to enroll in JN216 and I am very happy he did. I have been thinking about majoring in Journalism for the past year due to my love for writing. One concept that I am interested in learning about through taking this class is how to interview someone. Even though I do spend quite a few hours doing homework and college related tasks, I am passionate about a few things outside of college. I am a huge Oregon Duck fan and I love watching the Oregon Duck Women's basketball team. I enjoy doing activities outside like hiking, swimming, golfing, and bike riding. This is my first time taking a Journalism class so I am coming into this with an open mind and am ready to learn all the tricks and whistles to succeed. I have three goals for this term which are learning how to interview someone well, write some stories that will be published in The Commuter, and learn how to write a well-written story by using the tools from this class. Learning how to interview someone is an important skill that I am not only interested in learning but learning well because I have always been the person being interviewed due to applying for a new job so it will be fun to be on the other side. Writing stories to be published in The Commuter is not only a big goal but an exciting one for me because I have never had the chance to have any of my stories published. Writing well-written stories is something I constantly strive to do, not only for the satisfaction but knowing that I bettered my understanding on the tools and concepts that were given. 

    Recently, I have settled on my first news story which is "When do LBCC men's and women's basketball games start?" I hope to interview Mark Majeski, Jerod Gibson, and an LBCC basketball player. Some questions that I intend to ask are;

“How long is the basketball season?”

“ What have practices looked like this year due to Covid?” 

“ Due to Covid, are people allowed to come watch games?”

“ When is the first game?”

“ Are the players excited to start playing games?”

LBCC Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Are Finding Ways To Keep Things Rolling Even With Covid

The Linn-Benton men’s and women’s basketbal l teams and coaches have been itching to get back on the court due to Covid limitations. The Northwest Athletic Conference has created a phased approach that breaks down the amount of practicing, workouts, and competition the players are allowed to do to make sure they are taking proper health precautions. The coaches have also put players in their own pods to eliminate contact with each other. In a normal year or regular season, the teams would have started open gyms by Sept. 28. However, due to Linn County being in the high/extreme risk category for covid, that did not happen. Since Linn County is in the high/extreme category the teams are restricted in the amount of time they can practice and strength train. The teams cannot practice outside their basketball/weight training class. This means that they are only practicing three hours total a week and only have one and a half hours of weight training a week. As long as Linn County stays in...

10 Questions with Carol Menken-Schaudt Carol Menken-Schaudt decided to play on LBCC’s first-ever women’s basketball team, which was only the start of her outstanding basketball career. With not having much experience in basketball due to girls sports not being a priority back then, her skills began to improve immensely when she started playing for Linn-Benton. Oregon State University was calling her name and the U.S Olympic team was shortly after as well. Menken-Schaudt took every opportunity she could to continue to play basketball, being the 6-foot-4 athlete she is. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, opportunities like those were hard to find, especially as a woman. She is now working full-time in radio and most importantly spending time with her family. LBCC Volleyball Team Craving To Be Back On The Court

LBCC Volleyball Team 2020-21 The Linn-Benton volleyball team is craving some healthy competition and they are hopeful to soon start supporting and competing with their teammates on the court instead of virtually. The volleyball team has been mentally and physically preparing themselves since last summer in hopes of a season. Currently, the team is participating in small group workouts, including weightlifting twice a week. January 18 was the start of practicing within their activity classes and small group interaction. The team and coaches are looking forward to Feb. 1, where they are allowed to practice in a larger group setting within their activity class while still wearing masks and social distancing as much as possible. Due to Linn County being in the high/extreme risk category it makes it hard to determine the exact date when game play will begin.
